چکیده

ÐIn a cellular phone system, mobility databases called visitor location registers (VLRs) are used to temporarily hold the subscription information of the roaming users who visit the service area of the VLR. When the users leave the VLR area, the corresponding records in the VLR are deleted. Due to user mobility, the capacity of the VLR may not be large enough to hold information for all visitors in the VLR area at some time periods. This issue is called VLR overflow. This paper describes a record replacement policy to allow mobile users to receive services in the VLR overflow situation. We utilize analytic modeling to investigate the performance of the replacement policy. The study indicates that our approach effectively eliminates the VLR overflow problem with insignificant extra overhead. Index TermsÐCellular telephone network, database overflow, home location register, large-scale database, visitor location register.

Modeling and analysis of hierarchical cellular networks with bidirectional overflow and take-back strategies under generally distributed cell residence times

The rapid growth of wireless services and mobile users drives a great interest in cellular networks with a hierarchical structure. Hierarchical cellular networks (HCNs) can provide high system capacity, efficient channel utilization and inherent load-balancing capability. In this paper, we develop an analytical model and a performance analysis method for a two-layer HCN with bidirectional overf...

Overflow control for cellular mobility database

In a cellular phone system, the service area is partitioned into several location areas (LA’s). Every LA is associated with a mobility database called visitor location register (VLR). When a mobile user enters an LA, the user must register to the VLR before receiving any cellular service. If the VLR is full, the registration procedure fails and the system cannot deliver services to the user und...

Target Tracking Based on Virtual Grid in Wireless Sensor Networks

One of the most important and typical application of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is target tracking. Although target tracking, can provide benefits for large-scale WSNs and organize them into clusters but tracking a moving target in cluster-based WSNs suffers a boundary problem. The main goal of this paper was to introduce an efficient and novel mobility management protocol namely Target Tr...

LPKP: location-based probabilistic key pre-distribution scheme for large-scale wireless sensor networks using graph coloring

Communication security of wireless sensor networks is achieved using cryptographic keys assigned to the nodes. Due to resource constraints in such networks, random key pre-distribution schemes are of high interest. Although in most of these schemes no location information is considered, there are scenarios that location information can be obtained by nodes after their deployment. In this paper,...

Influence of Socioeconomic Characteristics on Purposes for which Mobile Phone was used by Small Scale Farmers in the Gezira State, Sudan

The objective of this study was to assess the influence of some socioeconomic characteristics on purposes for which mobile phone was used by small scale farmers in the Gezira State, Sudan. The total number of small- scale farmers in the State for 2013-2014 growing season was estimated to be 5000. Ten percent of the population was used using the simple random sampling technique. The collected da...
